Abstract
Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis are often referred to as Inflammatory Bowel Disease. The etiopathogenic mechanisms are not yet fully known, but one of their main characteristics, inflammation, is. Since the beginning of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, inflammatory control has been advocated as one of the pillars of treatment with the use of various drugs. This series of articles aims to address the evolution of the therapeutics of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, without pretending to be a treatment manual. In this first approach, the use of Small Molecule Therapy is reviewed following the scheme of previous vs. new treatments, making a journey from the first drugs used to the newest ones.
