Abstract
The Bispectral Index or BIS value is a parameter used for continuous non-invasive monitoring that estimates the degree of brain electrical activity and, therefore, the level of sedation or consciousness of the patient. It consists of a procedure by means of which adherent electrodes are placed on the skin of the frontal area of the patient connected to a specific monitor. The aim of this paper has been to describe the procedure of measuring non-invasive brain activity using the BIS device. BIS device placement technique is described in detail, including patient skin preparation, correct sensor placement, parameter recording, limitations and suggested sensor change frequency.
